Nội dung liên hệ :This is a story you’ll only see here on KCCI 8 News. A building in downtown Des Moines known for helping hundreds of homeless Iowans has new owners . And it’s making it it’s mission to help even more. KCCI’s Kim St. Onge got a sneak peak of the new building and joins us now with the exclusive story! After nearly five years of planning, the Des Moines Area Religious Council is taking over what used to be the homeless shelter off Mulberry Street. And everyone couldn’t be more excited! Caution tape stretches from wall to wall. It’s an eyesore. ‘IT’S JUST AN ALL GOOD, WONDERFUL THING FOR US!” That’s exactly what Sarai Rice was looking for. and now the DMARC food pantry is very excited to call it home. “I COULDN’T BELIEVE HOW BIG IT WAS ONCE WE ACTUALLY HAD CLEARED IT OUT.” Right now, DMARC squeezes donated food into a 16 hundred square foot building on 36th. Basically, a big closet. “NOW WHAT WE’LL BE ABLE TO DO IS BUY FOOD AHEAD OF TIME WHEN IT’S AT ITS LOWEST PRICE AND ACTUALLY STORE IT.” Which is why they say the new place that’s 4 times bigger, will actually save the pantry about a quarter million dollars each year! “IT’S AMAZING! IT IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!.” Two thirds of this new building will serve as a food warehouse. The rest is for offices. “WE’LL HAVE A CONFERENCE ROOM AND PLENTY OF ROOM FOR ALL OUR STAFF.” and plenty of room for a pit dock. Something the food pantry has never had before! “THIS WILL BE A PLACE WHERE LARGER TRUCKS OR SEMIS CAN PULL UP AND WE CAN UNLOAD FOOD.” But it’s not just the size that staff members are excited about. The new DMARC building will also be neighbors with the Central Iowa Shelter. “WE HAVE WORKED TOGETHER FOR A LONG, LONG TIME AND WE ARE SO PLEASED THAT WE WERE ABLE TO BUY THIS BUILDING FROM THERE AND SORT OF SUPPORT BOTH ORGANIZATIONS IN THAT WAY.” A double blessing they’ve wanted for half a decade that’ll be ready, as soon as this eyesore gets fixed) “IT’S JUST LIKE A GIFT THAT WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO FIND THIS SPACE AND REALLY MAKE USE OF IT IN AN ENERGETIC AND WONDERFUL WAY FOR THE COMMUNITY.” Rice says the new space also will allow for larger groups of volunteers to be helping at one time. She hopes to be up and running by the end of November or early December. Kim, thank you.
